Geometrical Relations Between Slab Dip and the Location of Volcanic Arcs and Back‐Arc Spreading Centers

Abstract A global study of subduction zone dynamics indicates that the thermal structure overriding plate may control arc location. fast convergence rate and a steep slab dip bring hotter mantle further into wedge corner, forming volcanoes closer to trench. Separately, laboratory numerical experiments showed development back‐arc spreading center (BASC) is driven by migration subducting hinge, especially following changes in geometry. As both location deformation regime depend on kinematics geometry, we investigate possible correlations between BASC, position volcanic arcs, at scale individual zones. To do this, compare distance from trench BASC Mariana, Scotia, Vanuatu, Tonga, Kermadec In most cases, are when dipping steeply. The correlation could result an interplay progressive geometry deformation. This assumes, one hand, isotherm apex which forms tied constant decoupling depth and, other opening accommodates change dip. decreases, controlling melt focusing move observed trends consistent with anchored 660 km depth.
